How to Read a Weather Map

These are the common symbols found on weather maps on TV and in the newspaper. Ever wonder what they mean?
This is the symbol for a high pressure system. A high pressure system is an area of a lot of atmospheric presure. It has winds that go in different directions and a rotates opposite to the earth's rotation. Fair weather is typically associated with high pressure.
This is the symbol for a low pressure system. A low pressure system is an area of very little atmospheric presure. that has winds that blows in the same direction and rotates in the same direction as the earth. Stormy weather is often associated with low pressure systems.
This is the symbol for a cold front system. A cold front is the very edge of an advancing cold air mass that is pushing out the warmer air in its path. Generally, with the passage of a cold front, the temperature and humidity decrease. Rain or snow is generally at and/or behind the front.
This is the symbol for a warm front system. A warm front is the leading edge of an advancing warm air mass that is replacing a colder air mass that is moving away. Generally, with the passage of a warm front, the temperature and humidity increase. Rain or snow is generally found ahead of the warm front.
This is the symbol for a stationary front system. A stationary front is exactly that: An air mass that is stuck over an area. This can result in the same weather in that area for several days. There may be two or more reasons why this happens. This can be caused by the counter action of a high pressure and a low-pressure system holding the air mass in place. Another reason is that there is nothing present to move the mass along, the opposite of the two pressures systems counter acting each other.
This is the symbol for rain showers. What this means is that it will probably rain off and on sometime during the next 24 hours.
This is the symbol for rain storms. What this means is that it will probably rain for most of the next 24 hours.
This is the symbol for thunderstorms. What this means is that there probably will be thunder, lightning, and heavy rain during the next 24 hours.
This is the symbol for snow flurries. What this means is that it will probably snow off and on sometime during the next 24 hours. We don't get much snow where the Science Center is located in Melbourne, Florida
This is the symbol for snow storms. What this means is that it will probably snow for most of the next 24 hours.
This is the symbol for ice storms. What this means is that the temperature is so cold that everything will be covered in ice. Ice storms are very dangerous.
When you see the sun by itself, it means it will be sky will be clear.
When you see the sun and a cloud together, it means it will be partly cloudy.
When you see the cloud by itself, it means it will be cloudy.
From June 1 until November 30, kids along the coastlines of the United States watch from this symbol. It is the symbol for a Tropical Storm. Tropical storms start out at sea, and get more powerful as they get closer to land. Their winds are under 39-73 miles per hour, but they can be very destructive.
Like the tropical storm, hurricanes happen between June 1 until November 30. These are like tropical storms but they are much stronger. Hurricanes can have speeds over 150 miles per hour. Hurricanes are very destructive. Families have to leave their houses when a hurricane comes their way.
